how so i decode date codes on Schwinn tires???
There have been many tires from Schwinn. In fact Schwinn patented, invented, and introduced to America many types of improvements in tire science or as they refered to it “tire art”. Do not fit Schwinn rims. Heavy duty balloon. Schwinn part number in red , manufacturer part number in black.
I was wondering how do i read a date code on Schwinn tires for example a stamp of C(30)2 or I’ve also seen UT and the three crossed circles.
What are we looking at? The steel frame is made from Reynolds tubing, brazed into fairly typical racing bike geometry. The seat tube is laid-back at a shallow angle, giving the rider good leverage to muscle around a heavy gear. This is a medium to large bike, and the size seems odd. In this era seatposts were not intended to extend very far beyond the frame, likewise the handlebar stem is just a few inches above the top tube.
The saddle is a Brooks, handmade in England.
The History of the Schwinn Sting-Ray and Krates
The Chicago Schwinns were among the most bomb-resistant bikes ever built, and they were built with unique technology. The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible.
The guy said it was from , but the Schwinn date code tells me it’s OLD Suntour top mount shifters, and ‘Schwinn Studded Ballon’ tires!
You will read in many places that no serial number lists exist prior to the fire at the Schwinn factory in August of This is not exactly true. Enough bikes have positively been dated by records such as invoices, build sheets, dealer ledgers, and dated photographs that a decent idea of serial number ranges can at least get us in the ball park. Other things such as how the bike was equipped and who sold it can also provide clues to when the bike was built.
Before using this information make sure you have a Schwinn. Also keep in mind a serial number will not tell you what model, options, colors or any other specific information like an automobile vehicle identification number VIN will. There are also no breakouts on exact production figures of models.

the most memorable edition of the Sting-Ray line to date: the Schwinn Krate. And with a inch slick back tire and a inch front wheel, they truly looked.
For many children living in America in the s and s, their first taste of freedom and adventure came on the wheels of a bicycle. In the days when motorcycles, muscle cars, and drag racers filled every kid with the need for speed, the bicycle was their answer. And the bike of choice? The Schwinn Sting-Ray. The coolest, most coveted of the Sting-Rays was the Krate, a bike name that puts a smile on the face of those who once owned this iconic ride. From the Sting-Ray would come extensive lines of banana seat bikes including, the Fair Lady , Manta-Ray, Fastback , and what is likely the most memorable edition of the Sting-Ray line to date: the Schwinn Krate.
Schwinn introduced the original Sting-Ray in after the company realized kids in California had been customizing their bikes to look like motorcycles. Bikes were fitted with inch wheels, elongated saddles, rear “sissy bars,” and ape hanger handlebars. It didn’t take long for Schwinn to develop a similar style. Al Fritz, Schwinn’s director of research and development, recommended the Sting-Ray as a way to replicate the style California kids were looking for.
The Sting-Ray quickly became the bestselling bike in Schwinn’s history. These kids’ bikes featured a coaster brake on the large back wheel and wide-stance handlebars that were perfect for popping big wheelies.
